AIDS Quilt 32

The collection of UK AIDS Quilts were made between 1989 and 1996 to commemorate friends, lovers and family members who passed away from an AIDS related illness during this time. You can zoom in to some of the specific details listed below.

The top centre panel has the names: Vinni, Serge, Eric, Gellof, Tony in a series of hearts with cloud backgrounds.

The bottom centre panel remembers Michael Smith. Michael’s wife Trisha, describes how: ‘In his [Michael’s] dreams he saw this lion guiding him to another world, more beautiful than we could imagine, letting him know that everything for him will soon be alright.’

The top right panel remembers Keith. A sparkly top and white satin gloves decorate this panel.

The bottom right panel has the Russian lettering NYPHEB (Nureyev). Nureyev was a legendary ballet dancer who defected from the Soviet Union in 1961. He is considerd by many to be the greatest male ballet dancer of his time.

The centre top panel remembers Michael Smith. A series of images of Michael are surrounded by a border of black stars.

The top left panel remembers Max Gordon with a checkerboard design of blue, yellow and pink.

The bottom left panel remembers Mark Freeman with an image of to theatre masks and various names of arts institutions like Royal Ballet.
